To illustrate scenes of the chase you need to have the heart of a hunter. Pieter Zaadstra is a hunter who paints and draws what he knows well. I first heard of Pieter when working with John Haenke on the Wildfish SBS Documentaries during the 1990s. John introduced me to Pieter at the Zaadstra Tasmanian studio where we witnessed this art book in progress.

Pieter comes from a long line of classically trained European artists with their penchant for painting the hunt. The art of the hunter is as ancient as mankind and Pieter continues the tradition with the publication of his art book "the Artist and the Fly Fisher".

Avid fly fishers will relate to the moods captured by Pieter. The art complements the fly fishermen at their sport and the grace and precision required to catch a trout in the wilds of Tasmania.

Fly fishing is poetry in movements and full of passion; it's fluid like the water and the wind and it has its moments of high drama and great beauty. In their pursuit of trout the fly fishermen become immersed in the wonderful wilderness under a vault of a blue sky. The intensity of the pursuit is for many a deep meditation. Pieter's art truly capture and distil the visual and the emotional world of the fly fishermen. His art is a rendition of their experiences and their enthusiasm.
